What if there’s only the barest hint of Gabriel Reyes in there, the rest of it blocked out by Reaper? It’s got memories and vague feelings from him, but so much of the anger and bloodshed is from itself (sometime it’s tempered, Gabe’s damnable conscience murmuring in the back of his mind to let the kids go, to not shoot a guard because he’s already out of the action you don’t need to kill him). Gabriel’s own consciousness is still in there, just buried deep, shoved off to the side because Reaper doesn’t need his mind, just the building blocks that make up his essence.
When Jack offers himself up and Reaper leaves Gabe it’s like waking up, like breathing for the first time. He’s lying on the floor naked and gasping like a newborn, staring fuzzily at this black miasma floating between himself and - Jack? He scrapes his memories together, pieces together the bits and pieces from years of only barely being aware of the world around him, chokes on oxygen and struggles to comprehend why the creature that’s had its hold on him all this time has finally let go.
He stares up at Jack’s face, at the stubborn set of his jaw, and he knows.
Jack screams when Reaper takes over him. He screams and Gabe remembers it, what it was like to have your entire being flayed apart and consumed and spat back out as something Else. He claws his fingers against the floor and tries to move, to do anything, but it’s been so long since he’s had a body of his own. The darkness engulfs Jack, rewrites him, Reaper’s skull-like visage imprinted like a permanent grin on the faceplate of his visor. Reaper settles into Jack’s body, inhales a deep breath of the same air Gabe is struggling so hard to obtain. It looks down at Gabe, head tilted to one side, clinical and detached.
“If it makes you feel better? He’s happy about this.”
And when Reaper disappears into a wisp of smoke, taking Jack’s body and very soul with it, Gabe wishes that he had the breath to scream.
OH MY GOSH YES, THIS IS IT, PERFECT. YOU WROTE IT SO WELL IM CRYING.
AHHH LET REAPER BE HIS OWN CHARACTER. LET JACK SAY FUCK. YESSSS.
Alright so I just wrote a big ass post on the larger subect but and it’s like 2am here so I may not write clearly, but I hope ya’ll don’t mind me jumping in on this because
THIS
Would be the the kind of work around to the “Reaper’s been around for decades” problem that I’d like to see.
But it would have to be PERFECT. The Overwatch team would have to SELL IT PERFECTLY. I’m still skeptical they can.
But this presentation? A+
